IPL 2026 Poor Fielding: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world’s biggest cricket league, where the world’s top players come to play every year. This league has always been known for aggressive batting, excellent bowling and exciting fielding. But in the last few years, a worrying trend is emerging, the level of fielding is falling rapidly. IPL 2026 can also be named ‘fielding epidemic’. This season, fielders are continuously missing catches, missing run outs and the number of misfields has broken all records.
Fielding level dropped in IPL
In IPL 2026, 508 misfields have been seen in just 65 matches, this number is much more than any previous season. Last year this figure was only 471. Whereas in the 2023 season this figure was only 267. This means that misfields have almost doubled in four years. Even in 2024, only 235 misfields were seen. But in the year 2026 this problem has become more serious.
Scary statistics of dropped catch
There have been 169 catches missed so far in IPL 2026. At the same time, there are still many matches left in this season. Last time the number of dropped catches was 207. Whereas, in the year 2024, 182 catches were dropped. But in the year 2023 this figure was only 142. The statistics of run out misses are also very bad. 10 teams together have missed 276 run out chances so far this season. At the same time, last year 356 chances of run out were missed. This figure was 150 in the year 2024 and 176 in 2023.
Why is fielding deteriorating?
Many reasons can be considered for the decline in the level of fielding. The biggest reason is the increasing trend of power-hitting. Batsmen now try to play big shots on every ball, due to which the ball comes towards the fielders at a faster pace. Due to modern bat technology and flat pitches, the speed of the ball has become very high, due to which fielders get less time to react. Another important reason could be schedule fatigue. In IPL, teams have to play matches continuously. Fielders get less rest due to travel, recovery and back-to-back games.
The third reason could be that there are more young players in the team. In fact, many franchises are relying on young domestic players, who have talent but their fielding skills are not yet mature. Apart from this, flood lights can also be a big reason, catching under lights is always considered difficult. Young players have very little experience of playing under lights. A misfield or dropped catch often changes the course of the match. Many matches were seen in the 2026 season where fielding mistakes decided the victory or defeat. If this problem is not addressed immediately, it may further affect the quality of the league in the future.
