From Bihar to UP…children do not want to go to government schools in these states, 86 lakh students reduced.

The Ministry of Education has released a report regarding the school education system of the country. According to the latest report of the ministry’s official digital database ‘UDISE+ 2025-26’, there has been a decline in the enrollment of students in government schools. There is a reduction of 86 lakh students in government schools between the academic year 2023-24 and 2025-26. During the same period, the number of students in private schools has increased by 88 lakh.

UDISE+ i.e. Unified District Information System for Education Plus is the official database of the Ministry of Education, which tracks data related to school infrastructure, admissions and teachers across the country. According to this, in 2025-26, the number of students enrolled in schools from primary level to secondary level across the country was 24.72 crores. Whereas in 2023-24 it was around Rs 24.80 crore. There is not much difference in this.

By how much has the number of students enrolled in government schools decreased?

The number of students enrolled in government schools across the country has decreased from 12.75 crore to 11.89 crore. There has been a decrease of approximately 86 lakh students. At the same time, the number of admissions in private schools has increased from 9 crore to 9.89 crore. That means a total of 88 lakh students have increased.

• According to the UDISE+ report, Bihar has the highest number of students enrolled in government schools compared to other states. But there has been a decline in it as compared to the year 2023-24. There were 1.71 crore students in government schools here in 2023-25. At the same time, their number will decrease to 1.66 crore in 2025-26. There has been a total decrease of 4.75 lakh students in a span of two years.
• There were 1.48 crore students enrolled in government schools of Uttar Pradesh during the year 2023-34. In the year 2025-26 it will decrease to 1.41 crores. In a span of two years, there has been a total decrease of 7.07 lakh students in government schools of Uttar Pradesh.
• The total number of students enrolled in government schools of Madhya Pradesh during the year 2024-25 was 81.28 lakh. It decreased to 79.70 lakh during the year 2025-26. In a span of 2 years, the enrollment of students in government schools here has decreased by 1.58 lakh.
• The total number of students enrolled in government schools of Rajasthan during the year 2023-24 was 77.82 lakh. In the year 2025-26 it reduced to 74.49 lakhs. There was a decline of 3.32 lakh students in the enrollment of students in government schools of the state during two years.
• There has been a decline in the enrollment of students in government schools of Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, during the year 2023-24, 51.08 lakh students were enrolled in government schools. It increased to 4979407 during the year 2025-26. In a span of two years, the number of students in government schools decreased by 1.29 lakh.
• Among the states with the highest number of students in government schools, enrollment has increased only in Bengal. The number of students admitted in Bengal during the year 2023-24 was 1.49 crore. In the year 2025-26 it increased to 1.54 crores. That means, during 2 years, there was an increase of 4.61 lakh students in admission in government schools.

Increase in teachers in schools across the country but decrease in government schools.

The total number of school teachers in the country has exceeded 1.02 crore. This has happened for the first time. Compared to the year 2022-23, a huge increase of 8.3 percent has been seen in the number of teachers this year. In the year 2023-24, there were 98,07,600 teachers in schools across the country. Now in the year 2025-26, the number of teachers has increased to 1,02,73,020.

At the same time, there were 5149771 teachers in government schools across the country during the year 2023-24. These numbers reduced to 5134623 in the year 2025-26. Talking about state wise figures, there were 632186 teachers in Uttar Pradesh in 2023-26. Decreased to 627124 in 2025-26. At the same time, there were 522200 teachers in Bihar, which increased to 536061. There were 393210 teachers in Madhya Pradesh, which increased to 399970. There were 445073 teachers in government schools of Rajasthan. Here it reduced to 441070. At the same time, the number of teachers in government schools of Bengal has also decreased. Here the number of teachers has reduced to 448113.

How the business of private schools is increasing in the country

The business of private schools is increasing in the country. During the year 2023, the total number of private schools across the country was 3.39 lakh. In the year 2025-26, it increased to beyond 3.4 lakh. There were 104508 private schools in UP which have increased to 107905. There were 11274 private schools in Bihar. This has increased to 12317. There were 33548 private schools in Rajasthan. Now it has increased to 33903. However, the number of private schools has declined in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bengal. In 2023-24, the number of private schools in Madhya Pradesh was 28212, in Maharashtra 18746, in Bengal 7176. Now in the year 2025-26, the number of private schools in these states has reduced to 27214, 17824 and 4035.

At present there are 79261 government aided schools in the country. Their number for the year 2025-26 is 8261 in UP, 717 in Bihar, 490 in Madhya Pradesh, 25525 in Maharashtra, zero in Rajasthan and 68 in Bengal. During the year 2023-24, there were 79349 of these schools across the country. If we talk about state wise figures, their number is 8262 in Uttar Pradesh, 712 in Bihar, 550 in Madhya Pradesh, 24406 in Maharashtra, 0 in Rajasthan and 74 in Bengal.

Why are children leaving government schools?

There has been a total reduction of 86 lakh children from government schools. On the contrary, 88 lakh new children have been enrolled in private schools. The biggest reason behind this is the increasing inclination of parents of children towards private schools. They feel that English medium, better discipline and quality of education is higher in private schools. Apart from this, posts of teachers remain vacant in government schools. Just a few teachers have the responsibility of thousands of students. Apart from this, teachers are also put on duty by the governments for non-academic work. This affects the quality of education. Due to this, students and their parents are becoming disillusioned with government schools.
