On Wednesday, 21 people were killed in a fire that broke out at the Flourish Stage B&B Hotel located in a narrow lane of Malviya Nagar in South Delhi. Most of whom were foreign citizens. 25 people were seriously injured in this accident, who have been admitted to the hospital. This fire that broke out in the hotel was quite terrible. Within no time the fire took a huge form, due to which the relief and rescue operations were also affected. If we look at the statistics, there has been a continuous increase in the incidents of fire.
Total 543 deaths from 2019 to 2026
According to the official data of the Delhi government, a total of 543 people have died in fire-related incidents in the capital from 2019 to March 2026. Recently, 9 people each died in fire incidents in Vivek Vihar and Palam areas. Frequent accidents have raised questions on fire safety standards.
65 people will die by the beginning of 2026
In the first months of the year 2026 alone, 65 people have died in fire-related accidents. It is clear from this that fire incidents remain a big challenge for the capital. The number of injured is also not less. Between 2019 and 2025, 4,403 people were injured in fire incidents.

During the Covid period, 41 people died in 2020-21 and 55 in 2021-22. However, after this the cases increased again and in 2022-23, 95 people lost their lives in fire incidents, which was the highest in recent years.
Grain market accident is the most horrifying
The highest number of deaths due to fire was recorded in 2019-20. This was the deadliest year in six years. During this period, 44 people died tragically in the grain market fire. This accident is counted among the biggest fire tragedies in the history of the capital. Earlier, 59 people had lost their lives in the 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire.

Huge increase in emergency calls also
With increase in fire incidents, emergency calls received by Delhi Fire Service have also increased. In 2019-20, DFS received 17,231 calls, which increased to 20,379 in the last year. The ever-increasing number of calls and deaths underlines the need for fire safety audits, inspection of buildings and awareness campaigns in the city.
After the Malviya Nagar accident, there is pressure on the administration to strictly check the safety standards in hotels, guest houses and crowded areas so that such tragedies can be prevented.
