Foreign Minister Jaishankar met Qatar PM, also discussed Middle East tension

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani on Sunday and discussed several areas of mutual cooperation including energy, trade, investment, connectivity and security. Jaishankar is on a visit to Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman from 5 to 10 July. This tour of Gulf countries is taking place at a time when the political situation in West Asia is changing rapidly after the agreement between America and Iran to end the conflict.

Jaishankar thanked the Prime Minister of Qatar for ensuring the safety and welfare of the Indian community in Qatar. Jaishankar posted on Twitter: “We reviewed various aspects of our bilateral cooperation, especially energy, trade, investment, connectivity, security and people-to-people ties. Also discussed new opportunities to further strengthen our strategic partnership.

West Asia conflict also discussed

Jaishankar also discussed with Prime Minister Al-Thani about the conflict and its impact in West Asia. Al-Thani is also the Foreign Minister of Qatar. He also met representatives of the Indian community. He said in a post on X that India’s engagement with the region underlined the importance of the community’s well-being. The commitment and contribution of the Indian community towards the Qatari society in these difficult circumstances is truly commendable and is being widely appreciated.

Appreciation of suggestions from Indian community

Jaishankar also appreciated the experiences and suggestions of the Indian community to further strengthen the India-Qatar partnership. During his current visit, Jaishankar will meet his counterparts and top leaders of four countries in the Gulf region. During this, they will exchange views on strengthening bilateral relations as well as on regional developments and issues of mutual interest.

Indirect talks between America and Iran

After weeks of increasing tension, along with Pakistan, Qatar and Oman also came forward as mediators to achieve a ceasefire in Iran. Indirect talks between the US and Iran will continue in Doha after the week-long funeral rituals of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei from Friday.

Jaishankar will go to New York on July 13

After visiting four Gulf countries, Jaishankar will travel to New York on July 13, where he will launch India’s official campaign for the 2028-29 term on the UN Security Council. Subsequently, he will attend the 3rd India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting in Brussels on July 14-15 and interact with his counterparts from the EU and Belgium.
