The name of this film was ‘Keechak Vadham’ (Keechaka Vadham). The interesting thing is that this film was not made in any one language, but as a silent film. In that era, there were no dialogues in films, so the question of language was not as important as it is today. However, it is said that all the actors in the film were Tamil, so it got the tag of Tamil language.

This historical film was directed and produced by R Nataraj Mudaliar, who is also known as the father of South cinema. He laid the foundation of film production in Chennai (then Madras). ‘Kichak Vadham’ was considered a great achievement technically at that time, because Indian cinema was still in its infancy and film production facilities were very limited. This film was completed in 5 weeks. But, its print has been lost, so now this film is not available anywhere. According to the report of IMDb, this film was made with a budget of Rs 37 thousand.

After the era of silent films, the real change in South cinema came when the era of talking films i.e. talkies started. South’s first talking film was ‘Kalidas’, which was released in the year 1931. This film was also special because both Tamil and Telugu languages ​​were used in it. It is considered to be the first talking film of South. After this, gradually separate film industries started growing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages.
