May 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The cool air of the air conditioner provides relief from the heat but this comfort also brings with it many problems. Most of the people sitting in AC complain of body pain or muscle stiffness. They are not able to ignore the air conditioner even if they want to. The routine of some people is such that they have to sit in the AC the whole day in the office. Then one becomes so addicted to it that one feels like staying in AC even at home. In such a situation, the risk of stiffness in bones and muscles increases. Do you know why this happens? Experts say that the cold air of the air conditioner not only gives us comfort but it also dehydrates the body.

Dry air comes out from the AC due to which there can be dehydration in the body. Let us tell you why this happens? What methods can be tried to relieve this stiffness or pain?

Why does AC cause body stiffness?

Experts say that people who sit for long periods in air-conditioned rooms or spaces start suffering from body pain, muscle stiffness or joint pain. Drop in temperature and sitting at the same place without moving causes stiffness in the body. Due to cold air, blood flow to the muscles is affected.

Tips To Reduce Pain And Stiffness

It is said that due to this the muscles get tightened due to which pain is felt later. Such people have an increased risk of complaining of back pain, neck pain, muscle cramps or stiffness.

How to get rid of muscle stiffness or pain?

If your routine is like this then you should take special care of some things. Let us tell you about them…

  1. First of all, do not make the mistake of keeping the temperature of the air conditioner too low. It is best to keep it between 24 to 26.
  2. Do not sit directly in front of or below the air conditioner.
  3. Water is no less than a boon. Sitting in an air-conditioned space reduces thirst. Dehydration happens rapidly in summer. Therefore, drink plenty of water throughout the day and keep the body hydrated.
  4. If you have a sitting job and live in an air-conditioned place at home, keep stretching from time to time. Stretch the muscles in a gap of one hour because by doing this our blood flow remains fine. If you want, you can do light yoga even while sitting on the seat.
  5. The most important thing is in which posture you are sitting on the seat. Whether the AC is running or not… always sit with a straight back.
