First look in the mirror yourself, AK Sharma’s counterattack on Akhilesh Yadav’s statement about power crisis.

May 23, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Energy Minister AK Sharma has hit back after Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav raised questions on the electricity system of Uttar Pradesh. Energy Minister AK Sharma wrote on Twitter that these days Akhilesh Yadav finds the power system of UP very weak. I would like to tell them that whenever they pick up the mirror, first look at themselves and then show them. He said that Akhilesh Yadav should first look at the situation of his rule.

AK Sharma said that at the end of SP rule (2012-17), the average peak demand of electricity in UP was 13000 MW. Whereas the current average is 30000 MW, i.e. two and a half times more. He said that today UP has become the state with highest peak power supply in the country. Which was earlier at the bottom.

AK Sharma said that almost twice as many consumers are being provided electricity today as compared to 2017. Taking aim at Akhilesh, he said that today there are 3.70 crore consumers compared to 1.80 crore during your time.

In the 70 years from 1947 to 2017, about 1.70 lakh villages left by you have now been electrified. Rural electrification and urban street lighting programs have changed the image of the state. UP’s own maximum production of thermal power in 2017 was 5160 MW, which increased to 5820 MW in 2022 and today is 9120 MW – that is, almost double.

The government has approved our proposal for a new thermal power project of 3×800 MW in Meja. The cost of this capacity of 2400 MW will be Rs 38358 crore. Similarly, the government has also given approval for a new thermal energy project of 2×800 MW in Mirzapur.

Similarly, in 2017, 11803 MW electricity was available in UP from all sources, which increased to 15395 MW in 2022 and today in 2025 it is 20038 MW – that is, almost double. Similar historical growth has taken place in the transmission sector. The total capacity of large substations in 2017 was 39000 MVA which increased to 1 lakh MVA in 2022 and today it is 2 lakh MVA in 2025.

There has also been immense increase in distribution capacity. For example, 1.59 lakh km of dilapidated wires left by your (Akhilesh Yadav) time have been replaced in the last four years. 30 lakh hanging pillars have been replaced with new pillars in just three years. Before 2017, electricity was available in some selected districts and villages. Today, electricity is being provided 18 to 24 hours to every village, every city, every district, every shop, every establishment and everywhere.

All the electrical workers are continuously engaged in public service by eliminating the disruptions that may occur at some places due to local conditions. Taking a jibe at Akhilesh Yadav, the Energy Minister said that an experienced person like you should support all of us who are engaged in meeting the unexpectedly increased demand due to the scorching heat. As far as Acacia is concerned, this decision has already been taken. You have installed them. We are destroying them completely.

The Energy Minister said that power supply was disrupted at some places due to natural disaster. Which takes a day or two. Because of this electricity could not reach there. There are some employees who do not listen to the consumers. Action will be taken against them.

On the letter of BJP MLAs, AK Sharma said that public representatives are welcome. He has written a letter to us, if needed we would have met him and his demands will also be fulfilled. We have also increased the line of call center 1912. Earlier it was 120 but now it has become more than 200. Transformers are also burning less than before. Besides, the lines are also being renovated.
