The Indian Army is soon going to make a big increase in its artillery strength. The indigenous Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) developed by DRDO has taken a big step towards joining the army after successful trials. This state-of-the-art rocket is capable of carrying out highly accurate attacks on enemy targets up to a distance of 120 kilometers.
After getting approval from the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), now the process of including this system in the artillery regiments of the Indian Army has accelerated. This will further increase the country’s defense capability.

The biggest feature of Pinaka LRGR is its accurate firepower. According to DRDO and ARDE, this rocket achieved only 2 to 3 meter CEP during the tests. That means it fell just a few meters away from its target. With this, the Indian Army will now be able to accurately target high-value targets like enemy bunkers, command centres, weapon depots, military gatherings sitting across the border from a long distance.
Will be used only with the existing Pinaka launcher
This system is also very important for the Indian Army because it will not require a separate launcher or new vehicles.
Both short-range rockets and the new 120 km range LRGR can be fired from the army’s existing Pinaka launcher. This will reduce the logistics burden during war and will provide more operational flexibility to the army.
Will attack deep into the enemy
According to the information, this rocket reaches a height of about 45 kilometers during flight and then falls down towards the target. Because of this, it can also target enemy positions hidden behind mountains or bunkers.
Different warhead for every mission
110 kg warhead can be installed in Pinaka LRGR. According to the mission, different types of weapons can be installed in it:
- PCB warhead to destroy bunkers and strongpoints
- Thermobaric warhead for massive destruction over large area
- Cluster munition to attack military gathering
- HEPF warhead for weapons depots and military bases
Cheaper and more useful than foreign systems
This rocket is being compared with Israel’s EXTRA system. But Indian Pinaka LRGR is much cheaper in terms of cost. While the cost of the foreign system is said to be around Rs 2.4 crore per rocket, the Pinaka LRGR is being prepared for around Rs 1.5 crore. Due to low cost, the Indian Army will be able to include these rockets in large numbers.
The test was conducted from Chandipur Test Range in Odisha.
Its first successful flight test was conducted from Chandipur Test Range in Odisha in December 2025. During this, the rocket had accurately hit the target 120 km away. According to sources, DAC approved this project and now the process of including it in the army has reached the final stage. Pinaka LRGR will give new strength to the long-range strike capability of the Indian Army, and will also strengthen India’s defense self-reliance.
