FIFA World Cup: Egypt created history, defeated Australia in penalty shootout, this happened for the third time in a row

July 4, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Egypt vs Australia, FIFA World Cup 2026: Egypt created history and registered its first victory in the knockout stage of the World Cup. Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 in the penalty shootout. Both the teams were tied at 1-1 till the scheduled and extra time, after which the match was decided by penalty shootout. After this historic victory, Egypt will now face current champion Argentina in the Round of 16. What was special was that this was Egypt’s first knockout match in the World Cup.

Due to this mistake of Egypt the match reached penalty shootout

In the 13th minute of the match, Imam Ashoor gave Egypt an early lead of 1-0 by scoring a brilliant header. After this, in the initial moments of the second half, Omar Marmush had a chance to double the lead, but his shot went wide. At the same time, in the 55th minute of the match, Australia equalized 1-1, but this goal was due to the mistake of Egyptian defender Mohammed Hani. While trying to clear a free-kick from Aiden O’Neill, Hani pushed the ball into the net behind his own goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir. That means he scored an own-goal.

Egypt’s thrilling victory in the shootout

Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia and former Liverpool star Mohammed Salah scored the first 3 goals for Egypt in the penalty shootout. Then Hossam Abdelmadjid scored the last goal to give victory to his team. At the same time, Salah played in this match despite suffering a hamstring injury in the last match of the group stage.

Australia, on the other hand, had a bad start when Harry Suter hit the very first shot in the air. After this, 18 year old Lucas Harrington’s fourth attempt hit the upper part of the goal post. For Australia, only Jackson Irwin and Ever Mabil could score goals in the shootout. Interestingly, Australia had fielded experienced goalkeeper Matthew Ryan for the shootout, but he could not stop even one of Egypt’s four shots. With this defeat, Australia’s record in the knockout stage is now 0-3. That means it has lost the knockout match for the third consecutive time.
