FIFA World Cup 2026: The one whose mother did not get a USA visa became the ‘wall’ of Cape Verde, 27 attacks by Spain failed

June 16, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Cape Verde Vs Spain: Cape Verde was one of the four teams that debuted at the FIFA World Cup 2026. But who would have thought that this second smallest country to debut in the World Cup, despite being ranked 64th in the FIFA rankings, would make the world number three team and former world champion Spain yearn for a goal. Making their debut against Spain at the Atlanta Stadium in the USA, Cape Verde played a 0-0 draw and secured their first point in World Cup history. It was possible for Cape Verde to do this thanks to its 40-year-old goalkeeper Vojinha, who thwarted 27 Spain attacks one after the other in the match. Now in such a situation, it would not be wrong at all to call him the ‘wall’ of Cape Verde.

Initially the contest between Cape Verde and Spain seemed one-sided. But, when the game progressed, it was revealed that those who were being underestimated were not weak but strong. In the match, Spain targeted Cape Verde’s goal post 27 times but all their attempts were unsuccessful. Simply because a wall named ‘Vozinha’ stood between the goalposts of Spain and Cape Verde.

Vojinha’s wonder against Spain

Understand the amazing feat that 40-year-old Cape Verdean goalkeeper Vojinha did against Spain from his statistics, which were taken during the match. Spain fired 27 shots against Cape Verde, on which Vojinha saved 7 times. 6 times he saved the goal inside the box and 3 times he dived to deny the goal. Mother couldn’t come to Atlanta as she didn’t get a visa

Vojinha was chosen player of the match for his excellent performance. He dedicated his strong performance against Spain to his family. Tears welled up in his eyes. He told that his mother could not come here due to not getting the visa on time. He grew up with his grandparents, but they too were not present to see his performance as they passed away a few years ago. According to Vojinha, his hard work paid off even at the age of 40. Now they will be able to tell its story to their coming generations.
