FIFA has lifted the one-match ban on American player Folarin Balogun, over which Belgium has expressed displeasure. Belgium and USA are to compete in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Due to the ban, Folarin Balogun would have been out of the match against Belgium. But, after FIFA’s decision to lift the ban, he will now be available for USA in that match. Belgium has accused FIFA of bowing to Trump for this decision. According to reports, the decision to lift the ban on Balogun was taken immediately after a phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

According to reports, Trump had asked the FIFA President to reconsider his decision during a phone conversation, after which FIFA did not cancel Bolagun’s red card but allowed him to play.
What did FIFA say on lifting the ban on American players?
FIFA clearly said in its statement that Bolagun’s suspension has been temporarily lifted for one year. If Balogun commits another offense during this period, the decision to suspend his sentence will be revoked and he will have to serve his sentence. FIFA’s judicial body has the authority to end disciplinary proceedings in whole or in part.

FIFA should be ashamed – Belgium
Folarin Balogun was banned for one match in the last match played against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was shown a red card in that match. FIFA’s decision to temporarily lift the ban on Balogun has been opposed by Belgian politicians and football officials. Expressing his displeasure over FIFA’s decision, he said that one should feel ashamed. This is a step to tarnish the image of the World Cup.
