According to the story of Mahabharata, Maharaja Shantanu of Hastinapur had once gone to the forest for hunting. There on the banks of river Yamuna he saw a beautiful girl. That girl was Matsyagandha Satyavati. Maharaj Shantanu fell in love with her as soon as he saw her. Its king Shantanu expressed his desire to marry Satyavati, then Satyavati told him that you will have to talk to my father for marriage. Then Maharaj Shantanu, father of Satyavati king of nishads Reached Dashraj.
Maharaj Shantanu asked for Satyavati’s hand from Dashraj. Dashraj agreed to this marriage, but he put a condition before the Maharaj. He said that only the son born to Satyavati will sit on the throne of Hastinapur. Maharaj Shantanu was shocked to hear this, because Shantanu’s elder son Devavrata was already the heir to the throne. Therefore Shantanu did not accept Dashraj’s condition and returned back to Hastinapur. However, after returning, Maharaj Shantanu started feeling worried and sad.
Devavrata made a terrible vow
When Devavrata came to know the reason for his father’s trouble and sorrow, he reached Satyavati’s father. Dashraj repeated the same condition before Devavrat which he had put before his father. After listening to Dashraj, Devavrata made a terrible vow. He took a vow that he would not sit on the throne of Hastinapur and that only the son born to Satyavati would become the king of Hastinapur. He also took a vow of lifelong celibacy, so that none of his children could claim the throne in future.
Due to this terrible vow, Devavrata came to be known in the world as Bhishma. After this, Devavrata reached Maharaj Shantanu with Satyavati and told him about his vow. King Shantanu was very happy with this great sacrifice of Devavrata. He gave the blessing of euthanasia to his son. That means Bhishma Pitamah could sacrifice his life whenever he wanted.
