Facebook had removed PM Modi’s video, what are the rules for deleting videos on Meta and YouTube?

July 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

After a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was removed from Facebook, Meta apologized and said that it was a technical mistake. The video was later restored. After this incident, this question might be coming in your mind that on the basis of which rules Meta and YouTube remove, allow posting or promote any video. Let us understand the video policy of both the platforms in simple language.

Why did Meta restore PM Modi’s video?

Meta said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video was removed from Facebook due to a technical error. The company admitted its mistake and apologized and later restored the video. According to Meta, videos on the platform are evaluated based on its community standards and advertising standards. If any content does not violate the rules, then it is allowed to remain on the platform.

When is a video removed on Meta?

According to Meta’s rules, videos that contain graphic violence, hate speech, adult nudity, content associated with dangerous organizations, or depict illegal activities are removed. Breaking the rules results in a strike on the account, due to which some features may be temporarily disabled or the account and page may also be removed. If someone repeatedly posts someone else’s video without making any creative changes or giving credit, the reach of such content may be reduced or monetization may be stopped. Recording in private or disturbing videos without anyone’s permission can also be removed immediately.

  • On breaking community rules- If a video contains violence, hate speech, obscenity, illegal activities or dangerous content, Meta removes it.
  • For repeatedly breaking the rules- If an account continuously violates the rules, it gets the first strike. If there are too many strikes, the account or page may also be removed.
  • On copying others’ videos- Reposting someone else’s video without making any new changes, commentary, or credit may result in the reach of the video being reduced or the video being removed.
  • On disturbing someone or violating privacy- Recording someone without permission, posting pranks, or targeted harassment videos is against Meta’s rules and such videos may be removed.
  • There may be exceptions in special cases- If a video is considered to be of public interest, Meta may in some cases allow it to remain instead of removing it due to security risks.

What are the rules for promoting videos on Meta?

Video ads promoted on Meta also have to follow community standards. Ads that use shocking images, misleading health claims, or unfairly target people are not accepted. Every ad goes through automated and manual review, which is usually completed within 24 hours. Different rules, disclaimers or age limits may also apply to ads related to political content, alcohol, gambling and financial services.

Rules for deleting and posting videos on YouTube

YouTube also removes videos that violate community guidelines. This includes content like dangerous activities, cyber attacks, hate speech and graphic violence. A first-time violation of minor rules may result in a warning, but if three strikes are received within 90 days, the channel may be permanently closed. Action is also taken on YouTube against spam, fake content, purchased views or videos re-uploaded without changes. If someone else’s content is used, it is necessary to make clear changes or comments from your side.

What is necessary to do for promotion on YouTube?

If a video includes paid promotion, sponsorship, or product placement, creators must select the “Paid Promotions” option in YouTube Studio. Doing paid promotion without giving information is considered against the rules. Apart from this, promotions related to illegal goods, unlicensed medicines, adult services, hacking tools or online gambling are not allowed. Video ads running through Google Ads also undergo automated and manual review first.
