Extreme heat wreaks havoc in Europe, ban on alcohol in France; Alert in Spain-Germany

June 21, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Many countries of Europe are currently in the grip of dangerous heat. The temperature is continuously increasing and in many places it has reached close to record levels. The situation has become so serious that France has imposed a partial ban on the consumption and sale of alcohol in some areas. Whereas in Germany, a warning has been issued regarding heat across the country and in Spain, a big football fan zone had to be closed.

A red heatwave alert is likely to be issued in 35 out of 96 regions in France on Sunday. According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature in south-western France, Paris and Burgundy regions can reach 39 to 40 degrees Celsius. At some places the temperature is expected to reach 41 degrees Celsius. The government is appealing to people to stay indoors, drink more water and avoid sunlight.

Temperature expected to reach 37 degrees in Italy

The effect of heat is clearly visible in Italy also. The temperature is expected to reach 36 to 37 degrees Celsius in many cities. Tourists coming to see the historical Colosseum in the capital Rome looked troubled in the scorching sun. Many people sought relief in the underground parts of the ancient Temple of Claudius, where temperatures were relatively low.

In the northern Italian city of Bologna, people were also seen washing their faces with water at fountains and sitting in the shade of buildings to escape the heat. This city is counted among the hottest cities of Italy.

Football fan zone closed in Spain

Due to the heat in Spain, the Football Federation has closed the fan zone built in Madrid’s Plaza de Colón. Here the World Cup match between Spain and Saudi Arabia was to be shown on the huge screen. Now fans will have to watch the match at other places. However, players will get the facility to play in an air-conditioned stadium in Atlanta, America, which partially runs on solar energy.

Heatwave increased due to climate change

Scientists say that due to climate change, heatwaves are coming more frequently and more dangerous in Europe than before. Due to this, the threat to people’s health is increasing and the economy is also being affected. Emmanuel Moulin, Governor of the Central Bank of France, said that excessive heat reduces the speed of work, reduces productivity and increases electricity consumption. According to him, such heatwaves also have a negative impact on economic development in the long run.
