The Indian government is going to make the biggest change ever in the security system of the country’s international borders. Announcing the ‘Quadrangular Security Grid’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made it clear that now border security will not be limited to the deployment of soldiers only, but a multi-layered security cover will be created with the participation of modern technology, strong infrastructure, state police, civil administration and border people. The government’s aim is to make India’s borders completely technology-based and impenetrable on the lines of Israel and America. For this, artificial intelligence, anti-drone system, smart sensors, thermal monitoring and integrated security network will be used. Besides, schemes like 400 percent increase in border infrastructure, fencing of about 1,610 km long India-Myanmar border and monitoring the demography in the border areas are also being taken forward rapidly. The government claims that these steps will help in effectively curbing infiltration, smuggling of arms and narcotics through drones, organized crime and other security threats from across the border.
What is ‘Quadrangular Security Grid’?
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced ‘Quadrangular Security Grid’ in the Land Border Districts SP Conference. This new system will base border security on four strong pillars. In this, the Central Border Security Force (BSF), police of border states, civil administration and local citizens living on the border will work together. Its objective is not only to increase surveillance on the border, but also to rapidly exchange information at every level and take immediate action on any threat. The government says that this will make the border security stronger and more effective than before.
There are four main bases of the quadrangular security grid.
- Secure and technology-based border management
- economically strong border areas
- Security conscious local society
- Modern and integrated security system

‘Smart Border’ will be built on the lines of Israel and America
The government is now working towards making border security completely technology based. Under this, cameras equipped with artificial intelligence, smart sensors, thermal imagers and anti-drone systems will be used. Where normal fencing is not possible, every activity will be monitored using underground sensors and infrared technology. The anti-drone system will help in identifying suspicious drones and stopping them or neutralizing their signals. The aim of the government is to immediately identify every suspicious activity on the border and send information to the security agencies.
Border infrastructure increased by 400 percent, now security will be done scientifically
Amit Shah said that in the last years the government has increased the infrastructure of border areas by about 400 percent. Roads, bridges, communication networks and other essential facilities have been developed rapidly in the border areas. Its purpose is to ease the movement of security forces and ensure immediate action when needed. The Home Minister said that now border security is being taken forward with scientific thinking, so that India’s border management can be included in the most modern system of the world.
Demography will also be monitored to prevent infiltration
The Home Minister said that unnatural population changes in the border areas can become a serious challenge to national security. Therefore, in the new system, a mechanism is being prepared to quickly disseminate information about any such activity from the local level to the top level. The government says that any unusual change in the demography of the border areas will be continuously monitored. Its objective is to stop infiltration, illegal activities and organized efforts from across the border in time.
Complete fencing will be installed on India-Myanmar border
The government is carrying out fencing work on the 1,610 km long international border between India and Myanmar at a cost of approximately Rs 31,000 crore. The objective of this project is to curb illegal infiltration, drug smuggling, arms smuggling and other cross-border crimes. The government believes that strong fencing and modern surveillance system will further strengthen the security of the north-eastern states. Along with this, special attention is also being given to the security and development of the people living in the border areas.
Border areas will be strengthened with the thinking of ‘first village’
Amit Shah said that the government is now developing the villages situated on the border by considering them not as the ‘last village’ of the country but as the ‘first village’. Under the Vibrant Village Programme, access to employment, basic facilities and government schemes is being increased in these areas. The aim of the government is to stop migration from the border areas and make the people living there an active part of the security system. In the new strategy, local citizens have also been given an important role as the eyes and ears of the border security system.
New security model being prepared for 15 thousand kilometer long border
Amit Shah said that India’s approximately 15 thousand kilometer long international border passes through 18 states and union territories. In such a situation, border security cannot be limited only to posts and soldiers. The government is now creating a comprehensive security cover by connecting technology, security forces, state police, civil administration and local society in an integrated network. He says that the aim of this model is to prevent infiltration and make the border areas safer, prosperous and more aware.
