The troubles of Google, one of the world’s largest tech companies, now seem to be increasing in Europe. According to reports, the European Union (EU) is preparing to impose a record fine of hundreds of millions of euros on Google. The matter is said to be related to violation of Google search business and competition rules. The European Union alleges that Google is giving more advantage to its own services in search results. If this fine is imposed, it could be the biggest action ever taken under the Digital Markets Act.
What is the whole matter after all
According to Reuters report, German newspaper Handelsblatt has claimed that the European Union is preparing to impose a fine of high triple digit million euros against Google. This investigation started in March 2025 and its focus is on Google’s search business. EU regulators believe that Google gives more advantage to its own services in search results, due to which other platforms suffer losses. The European Union says that the world’s largest search engine will also have to follow the rules of fair competition in the digital market. This is why the EU is looking at this matter very seriously.
Why did Google’s tension increase due to DMA?
The European Union has enacted the Digital Markets Act (DMA) to limit the power of big tech companies. The purpose of this law is to provide a level playing field in the digital market and reduce the dominance of tech giants. If this fine is imposed on Google, it will be the biggest fine ever under DMA. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said that currently the regulator’s focus is on finding a solution, but there will be no delay in taking further strict measures if necessary. He made it clear that the EU wants companies to follow the rules and maintain a fair environment in the digital market.
What did Google say on the allegations
Alphabet-owned Google has opposed the EU’s demands. The company says that the changes made so far under DMA have spoiled the Google search experience in Europe. A Google spokesperson said that the changes made in search have proved to be the biggest downgrade in the company’s history and are not giving a better experience to European users. The company also says that the experience of common users is being weakened for the benefit of some complainants. However, Google also made it clear that it is ready to resolve the dispute and continue talks with regulators. Recently, the European Commission had also given additional time to Google to present its solution.
