Entry of AI in China’s legal sector, are lawyers’ jobs in danger?

June 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

There has been a stir in China’s legal profession. In fact, a large legal database associated with Peking University has launched a large AI language model tool. Its specialty is that it can extract the correct sections of the law and their related information. It can also create contact automatically.

Use of models developed by Anthropic

A Standard Model Context Protocol (MCP) interface has been introduced in Chinalawinfo PKULaw, the largest legal database of Peking University. It was developed by Anthropic in 2024. It fits like a flash drive in any major language model. Provides him with reliable legal information immediately.

Users are now getting this information instantly

According to the developers, the addition of this AI language model tool has provided support in accessing a large collection of regulations, court decisions, academic analysis and case records through this legal database. It also allows users to search, verify currency, draft contracts and collect similar cases. It also provides outputs that are not only accurate but can also be traced back to their source.

Are lawyers’ jobs in danger due to AI?

On this concern, Zhang Jian, Deputy General Manager of Chinalawinfo PKULaw, said that this service is purely an assistant, not a replacement. However, the first group to feel its impact may be legal assistants, junior lawyers, legal specialists, legal researchers and those responsible for search, organisation, comparison and initial drafting.

Developers believe – it will not replace legal professionals

He also said that AI improves the efficiency of basic information processing. But it cannot replace the judgment, accountability or client communication of legal professionals. Human-AI collaboration will be very important in future. This will enable legal experts to focus more energy on taking difficult decisions and providing high-value services.

Highly repetitive and scalable work is common in large law firms. In such a situation, these tasks can be made easier. Many lawyers believe that if a reliable tool can handle these paperwork tasks, it will greatly increase the efficiency of work.

Lawyers’ work will become faster than before

At the same time, Zhang Jian once again reiterated that AI technology is still growing rapidly. But AI will not replace the legal profession. However, it will definitely change the way legal services are delivered. The work from research to drafting and verification will become faster. However, tasks like taking complex decisions, talking to clients, taking strategic decisions will still remain with the lawyers.
