The Supreme Court has directed to remove the encroachments on the banks of Ganga in Bihar’s capital Patna within 6 weeks. The court has given 6 weeks time to the Bihar government to remove all unauthorized structures, constructions and encroachments between Naujar Ghat and Noorpur Ghat on the banks of Ganga.
The Supreme Court directed that its order should be followed irrespective of any interim order passed by the High Court or the district courts. The court also gave one last chance to all the states to provide information about the encroachments on the banks of the Ganga and warned that if they failed to do so, it would summon the Chief Secretaries of the concerned states.
What did the court say?
A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Vishwanathan noted that despite earlier directions, no steps had been taken to remove the encroachments between Nauzer Ghat and Noorpur Ghat. The special thing is that the court directed that its instructions should be followed completely, no matter what order is in force. The Supreme Court also referred to the interim orders passed by various courts, which had restrained the authorities from taking action to remove encroachments.
On March 12, 2026, the court had observed that out of 213 encroachments identified between Digha Ghat and Naujar Ghat, only 58 had been removed. While 145 still remained. At that time the state had cited interim orders of the High Court and district courts as the reason for the delay. The Supreme Court had also taken note of the arguments that there were hundreds of encroachments in the area between Naujar Ghat and Noorpur Ghat.
