Employee made to do extra work for taking washroom break more than 30 minutes, employee’s post sparked new debate

June 13, 2026 by Uma Shankar

To increase the efficiency of workers in the office, companies often keep an eye on their working hours, project progress and meetings. This is considered a normal part of almost every corporate environment. But imagine, if a company starts monitoring the time the employees go to the washroom, what will happen to the employees? Recently, a similar case has come to light, which has sparked debate on social media.

An employee working in Ahmedabad shared his experience regarding a new policy of his company on the social media platform Reddit. According to her post, the company has recently started recording the washroom break times of its employees. The employee claims that now it is being monitored how much time each employee is spending in the washroom throughout the day and if someone takes more than the prescribed limit, then he is expected to stay in the office and work for extra time.

What is the whole matter?

The employee told that she has been working in the company for the last 10 months. During this time he took his breaks as usual, but no questions were ever raised about his use of the washroom. However, recently the management informed him that he has taken a total of 53 minutes of washroom break in a day, whereas the time fixed by the company is 30 minutes.

According to him, the company told him that due to exceeding the stipulated time limit, he would have to stay in the office and work overtime. The employee claims that he was asked to work extra 40 minutes. This also seemed strange to him because he had always completed his work on time and there had never been any complaints about his performance.

In the Reddit post, the employee also mentioned that he also leaves his mobile phone on his desk when he goes to the washroom. He says that he does this so that no one feels that he is wasting time on the pretext of a break or is busy with personal work. Despite this, the company keeping detailed records of her washroom breaks is making her feel uncomfortable.

According to the employee, his office and washroom are very close to each other. It doesn’t take much time to travel there. Apart from this, it does not have any negative impact on the productivity of his work. Still, this kind of monitoring and time calculation from the company’s side is troubling him mentally.

He wrote in his post that now he is forced to think every time before going to the washroom. He feels that his time is being recorded again or he may not be asked for an answer later. Because of this, unnecessary mental pressure has increased on him. He believes that measuring employees’ personal and necessary breaks in this way can make the office environment stressful.

As soon as this post went viral on social media, a large number of people reacted to it. Many users called this policy of the company excessively controlling. He said that the productivity of employees should be evaluated on the basis of their work and results, and not on the basis of time spent in the washroom.
