Emergency at 51: 25 June 1975… This is a date which is counted as a dark chapter in the country. On this day 51 years ago, emergency was imposed in the country. Emergency was declared at the behest of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. His decision was like an attack on the soul of freedom. Was going to break the foundation of democracy. Today it has been 51 years.
PM Modi has remembered those days on the 51st anniversary of the Emergency and has called the Emergency of 1975 a direct attack on the Constitution. He tweeted, “Today we pay tribute to all those who staunchly defended democratic values during the Emergency, one of the darkest chapters in India’s history.” Emergency was a direct attack on our Constitution.

During the Emergency, he witnessed the violation of civil liberties, curbs on freedom of expression, arrests of political leaders, journalists, social workers and attacks on institutions considered the cornerstone of our democracy. He also highlighted the extraordinary courage of countless citizens who upheld the ideals of the Constitution.
PM Modi reiterated his commitment towards protecting constitutional values. He said that for all of us, our Constitution symbolizes the aspirations, rights and duties of 140 crore Indians. We are committed to protecting constitutional values. Inspired by the spirit of the Constitution, we will build an India which will always be committed to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Let us tell you that on June 25, 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared emergency under Article 352 citing internal unrest. Emergency was in force in India between 25 June 1975 and 21 March 1977.
