May 22, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Qurbani Meat Rules: Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha are considered very special in Islam. Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated 2 months after Eid-ul-Fitr i.e. Meethi Eid. Eid-ul-Azha, also known as Bakri Eid, is celebrated on the 10th of ‘Zul-Hijja’, the last month of the Islamic calendar. On this day Muslims sacrifice halal animals like goat, sheep, buffalo and camel. There is an order to divide the meat of sacrificed animals into three parts on Eid-ul-Azha. One part is for oneself, the second part is for relatives or friends and the third part is for the poor or needy. You must have often seen that people keep the sacrificial meat in the fridge for months and eat it comfortably. But many people have a question in their mind that for how many days should the sacrificed meat be eaten? Let us know what has been said in the Hadiths of Islam regarding this.

In the Quran, the holiest book of Islam, the statement about sacrificial meat comes in Surah Al-Hajj (22:36). According to this, there is a clear order to eat the sacrificial meat oneself and feed it to the needy and those who ask. It is also mentioned in the Quran that it is not flesh or blood that reaches Allah, but the goodness and piety (Taqwa) of a human being. Many people store the meat of animals sacrificed on Eid for a long time. In such a situation, the question arises that for how many days can you keep the sacrificial meat? For how many days can I eat? For how many days is it okay to keep sacrificial meat? Let us know the answers to all these questions.

How long should we eat the sacrificial meat?

Some people say that’Eid-ul-Azha‘ But it is not permissible to keep the sacrificial meat for more than three days and Prophet Muhammad prohibited keeping the sacrificial meat for more than three days. And some people say that you can keep the sacrificed meat and eat it for as long as you want. Keep it for a week or a month as per your choice i.e. you can keep the sacrificial meat as long as you want. So what is the reality, for how many days is it okay to keep the sacrificial meat? Islamic scholar Mufti Salauddin Qasmi told TV9 in a special conversation that you can eat the sacrificial meat for as many days as you wish. There is no limited time to store or consume it. You can use your portion of meat by keeping it in the refrigerator for months or even a year. Many people say that the sacrificial meat should be finished before Muharram arrives, otherwise that meat becomes haram by the time Muharram arrives. But these are just things made up by people and are not true.

What do the Hadith say?

According to Islamic Hadith, 1400 years ago in the year 9 Hijri, on the occasion of sacrifice, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “O people, do not keep the sacrificial meat for more than three days and distribute your meat among the poor and needy.” Sahaba Ikram followed this and did not keep the meat for more than 3 days and distributed the meat among the poor. Then one year later, i.e. in the year 10 Hijri, on the occasion of sacrifice, the beloved Prophet said, “Keep the sacrificial meat for as many days as you want. Keep it for a week or a month. There is no restriction in this, that is, you can keep the sacrificial meat as long as you want.” So Sahaba Ikram requested – O Prophet, last year you had forbidden to keep the sacrificial meat for more than 3 days and now you are allowing it to be kept, what is the matter? On this question, Muhammad Sahaban replied, “Last year, there was a lot of poverty among the people and people were not able to sacrifice, that is why I refused to keep the meat for more than three days so that the meat reaches all the people, but now the situation is fine, so you can keep the meat for sacrifice as long as you want.”

In such a situation, any Muslim can keep the sacrificial meat in his house for as many days as he wants and can eat it as long as he wants. Shariat has allowed this. But it is considered better that the sacrificial meat be consumed as soon as possible and distributed among the people. However, even if a person does not do this, there is no crime.
