Actually, this film is based on the life of ‘Lavani Empress’ Vithabai Narayangaonkar, a big name in the world of Lavani, a famous dance art of Maharashtra. Vithabai was a great artist who not only kept the traditional folk arts like Lavani and Tamasha alive, but also gave them a new identity at the global level. He has also been honored with the President’s Award. Now the controversy is about the fact that when the film is made on such a great personality, then its name is ‘itha‘Why was it kept? The Film and Cultural Department of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has expressed strong objection to this name.
NCP issued letter
State President of NCP’s Film and Cultural Department Babasaheb Patil has issued an official letter (circular) in this regard. He said that making a film on the struggle and life of Vithabai Narayangaonkar is a matter of great pride for the culture of entire Maharashtra and the country. But naming the film ‘Itha’ does not seem right at all. Babasaheb Patil has demanded that this great artist and his art should be given full respect. Therefore, the filmmakers should immediately change its name to ‘Vithabai’ or ‘Vitha’, so that people can directly recognize her history and personality.
However, social media users are not able to digest this opposition of NCP much. Many fans have given a logical argument on this and said that even today in rural areas, there is no practice of taking anyone’s full name, rather in the simple and typical dialect there, ‘Vitha’ is called ‘Itha’ only. Of course, Vithabai ji earned great respect across the world on the basis of her art, but naming the film ‘Itha’ does not show any disrespect, but reflects the grassroots connection and the innocent language of the village.
