
West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari announced in the Assembly on Monday that Former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai will head the committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in West Bengal. The draft of the Uniform Civil Code Bill will be presented before the state cabinet on July 2. Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari said, “We will bring this bill. We have promised it in the proposal. We are committed. Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee has always said, one country, one head, one legislation.”
He said that we will bring the draft of this bill to the cabinet for approval on July 2. Uniform Civil Code Bill will be brought in West Bengal on the basis of Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand, Assam and Gujarat. A law will be applicable in this state. Two bills will not be implemented on the basis of religion.
He said that in this case, the indigenous people, tribals and Kurmis, who are our old tribes, will be out of the scope of this proposed bill. I have proposed to form a committee following Uttarakhand and Gujarat. The chairperson of that committee will be former Supreme Court Justice Ranjan Prakash Desai.
Committee will present report in four weeks
He said that along with this, a retired IAS officer, a legal expert, an educationist, a social worker and an additional secretary will be members. This committee will look into a total of 9 issues including marriage, divorce, inheritance of property, guardianship of children, adoption.
He said that this committee has been given four weeks time. After accepting the recommendations of this committee in August, we will bring the UCC bill and this bill will be implemented in West Bengal. You will have something to say, you will talk to the committee, but listen, we are determined to implement this UCC in West Bengal.”

UCC will be implemented in Bengal
West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya reiterated the party’s commitment towards UCC and said that BJP has no hidden agenda. Ever since the party was formed, it has been advocating UCC. Even when we had just two MPs, we talked about it, and now with 303, we are still talking about it. Wherever BJP comes to power, UCC will be implemented.
He said that not only BJP; Many sections of the society, including people from minority communities. Support UCC. There should be one law for one country.”
Opposition raised questions on the bill
Union Minister Sukant Majumdar said, “The Prime Minister has also expressed concern about demographic changes. In the future, a demographic commission will look into these issues. If you look at the demographic changes taking place in many parts of the country including Bengal, factors like ‘land jihad’ have played an important role. Our government is moving in that direction.”
On the other hand, opposition parties Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, Ritabrata Banerjee faction and other opposition parties opposed this proposed bill and said that parties from the House to outside will oppose it.
