Tension has once again increased in the politics of West Bengal. After the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, former Chief Minister of the state and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has made serious allegations against BJP. He claimed that after the attack, pressure was put on hospitals and doctors to influence Abhishek’s treatment. He said that attempts were made to prevent Abhishek from being admitted to the hospital and to influence medical decisions.
Referring to Abhishek’s treatment after the attack, Mamata Banerjee raised the question that if hospitalization was not necessary then why was he kept under observation initially. He said, ‘If there was really no need for hospitalization, then why was he taken to the ITU (Intensive Treatment Unit) in the first place, why was he kept under observation for almost two hours and why was he advised to undergo several medical tests and scans?’
Mamata’s big allegation on BJP
Banerjee alleged that efforts were being made to stop Abhishek from getting treatment after the attack. He claimed that pressure was being put on hospitals and senior officials not to admit him, adding that ‘the people in power (BJP) are threatening all the hospitals and top officials not to admit Abhishek Banerjee because they do not want him to be treated’. He alleged that a hospital administrator told him that he was receiving threat calls from the police.
He said, ‘The most worrying aspect of today’s developments is that pressure was put on doctors and hospital authorities regarding the treatment of an injured patient.’ He stressed that decisions regarding admission, discharge and treatment should rest solely with medical professionals. He said that Abhishek was kept under the observation of doctors from around 8.15 pm to around 11 pm, after which he was discharged.
