July 20, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Eat a clove of garlic daily and prevent cancer? Is this really possible? In India, people adopt many such home remedies for the treatment or prevention of cancer. But there is still a lot of research to be done regarding how effective these are. Garlic is useful in protecting us from cancer.. Is it a myth or a truth? Without knowing this, some people start eating it daily. Garlic contains many elements and antioxidants but it is wrong to believe that it is a cure for cancer.

Garlic can protect us from many diseases and health problems. But it is not necessary that it proves completely effective against cancer. Let us tell you through experts how much truth is there in this.

What did the expert say?

Dr. Manish Sahni (Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Kailash Deepak Hospital) It is said that if we talk about garlic, it has many health benefits. Many nutrients like Vitamin B, Vitamin C are found in it. Apart from this, some sulfur compounds, such as allicin and SLL cysteine, are present in it, which have antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties are considered beneficial for our body and overall health.

Now if we talk about the question whether garlic reduces the risk of cancer, then first of all it is important to understand that the belief that garlic can cure cancer is a myth. So far, no human studies have proven that garlic can cure cancer or that it is an anti-cancer treatment in itself.

Experts said, in some studies it has been observed that if garlic is consumed in quantities of about 5 to 10 grams or more a week, a slight reduction in the risk of stomach cancer and some colorectal cancers has been observed.

Other benefits of garlic

Garlic contains allicin, flavonoids and antioxidants. The allicin present in it benefits our immunity because it works against bacteria, viruses and fungus. Therefore, it is believed that cold and cough can be avoided by consuming garlic.

Garlic is also useful in controlling blood pressure. Actually, with the help of this white thing, the production of nitric oxide in our body increases. In this way the blood vessels relax. In this way it helps in controlling blood pressure.

According to many researches, it reduces bad cholesterol to some extent. Apart from this, it can also reduce oxidative stress. It contains many antioxidants, so it can prove to be effective in protecting against damage caused by free radicals.
