Does AC make bones weak? Does it also increase arthritis? Learn from experts

June 17, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Use of air conditioner has become common nowadays to get relief from heat. But many people have this question in their mind whether spending too much time in AC makes the bones weak. Or because of this the problem of arthritis increases. On this topic, TV9 interviewed Dr. L. Had a special conversation with Tomar (Vice Chairman and Head Department of Orthopedic and Joint Replacement, Max Hospital, Patparganj, Delhi). Experts say that AC does not directly weaken our bones. Bone strength mainly depends on calcium, vitamin D and balanced diet, regular exercise and hormonal balance.

Some people have such a habit of living in air conditioner that they use it at home, office and even while going somewhere. People have a question about weakening of bones due to AC? Let us tell you through experts how much truth is there in this.

Expert opinion on damage to bones due to AC

However, if a person spends most of the time in the air conditioner at home or office. If there is less exposure to sunlight, then Vitamin D deficiency starts in the body. Experts say that if Vitamin D deficiency persists for a long time, the bones start becoming weak. Because of this, the risk of serious bone disease osteoporosis increases.

Does AC increase arthritis?

As far as arthritis is concerned, AC does not cause it nor does it cause permanent damage to the joints. But due to living in a cold environment, some people may feel more pain, stiffness and discomfort in the joints. Especially those people who already have osteoarthritis. This pain is usually related to temperature and muscle stiffness and not to the disease.

Pay special attention to these things

Take sunlight for 10 minutes daily. Experts say that sunlight from 7 to 8 in the morning is best for the intake of Vitamin D. However, one should avoid taking sunlight from 12 to 4 pm because there are more chances of sun tanning at this time.

Things containing calcium and vitamin D- Include such things in your diet which contain these elements. For this you can consume milk. Apart from this, many other dairy products like cheese, curd also contain calcium. If you want to fulfill the deficiency of Vitamin D through diet, then definitely include desi ghee in your diet.

Do exercise and walk- According to Dr. L Tomar, every person should do physical activity for some time throughout the day. Those who cannot do heavy workouts should take a walk daily. The digestive system also remains fine with this easy activity.

AC temperature- The government has also said that we should keep the temperature of AC at 24 degrees. Do not keep it too low as this causes stiffness in the bones. Also avoid sitting in the same position for a long time.
