Apart from being great in taste, jamun also gives many health benefits to our body. There are many popular myths regarding this, the most important of which is whether eating it controls the sugar level. Talking about the elements of blackberries, it contains vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, iron and many antioxidants. Our immunity is boosted through Vitamin C present in Jamun.
By the way, people consider consumption of not only blackberries but also its seeds as beneficial. Some people prepare kernel powder at home and mix it with water and drink it. They believe that this controls sugar. Can Jamun really control diabetes? Learn from experts..
What did the expert say?
Dr. Nishant Jain, (Consultant Endocrinology, Kailash Deepak Hospital) says that blackberries have been considered beneficial in diabetes for a long time. But first of all it is important to understand that Jamun is not a cure for diabetes nor can it replace the medicines given by your doctor. You can consider this as a part of a healthy diet, which can help in managing diabetes in a better way.
Some natural compounds like anthocyanin, ellagic acid, flavonoids and jambolin are found in jamun. These act like antioxidants and help in protecting the body cells from oxidative stress. In simple language, oxidative stress is a type of damage occurring inside the body, which is seen more in people with diabetes.
How are blackberries used?
Some preliminary studies have also indicated that jamun can slow down the process of converting starch into sugar to some extent and can help in improving the ability of insulin to work in the body. However, larger human studies are still needed on this.
Insulin is the same hormone that works to control blood sugar. Apart from this, blackberries also contain good amount of fiber and its glycemic index is also low. Therefore, after eating it, blood sugar increases slowly compared to many other sweet fruits.
Problems caused by blackberries
Experts say that this does not mean at all that the more berries you eat, the more benefits you will get. Eating excessive blackberries may cause problems like constipation, flatulence or upset stomach for some people. If you are already taking diabetes medicine or insulin, then you need to take some care.
One more thing, avoid eating jamun on an empty stomach and do not eat it with milk or immediately before or after drinking milk. This may cause digestive problems to some people. So if you have diabetes, you can definitely eat berries, but in the right quantity.
Keep these things in mind
You will get the real benefit only when your diet is balanced, you do regular exercise, keep getting your blood sugar checked from time to time and also keep taking the medicines prescribed by the doctor. Jamun can help manage diabetes, but it should never be considered a substitute for treatment.
