The politics of Karnataka is witnessing a big change. Siddaramaiah has resigned from the post of CM. Now it is the turn of DK Shivkumar to get the command of power. However, the same thing is happening whose script was written behind the scenes three years ago. It’s just been happening for a while. In the year 2023, Congress had registered a big victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections. After this, when it came time to choose the Chief Minister, there was a huge tussle between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar. There was discussion in political circles that an agreement has been reached to share power. In this, Siddaramaiah can become the Chief Minister for the first two and a half years and then DK Shivkumar can become the Chief Minister for the remaining two and a half years. However, from the high command to Siddaramaiah and Shivkumar did not say anything publicly on this.
In these three years, there was a lot of turmoil in Karnataka Congress many times. While Siddaramaiah continued to sit on the CM’s chair, Shivkumar continued to strengthen his power. In political language, he continued to follow the discipline of the organization. This became his biggest political strength. In fact, at the time of government formation in 2023, there was a fierce tug of war between him and Siddaramaiah for the post of CM. Then the party high command struck a balance and along with making Siddaramaiah the Chief Minister, made Shivkumar his deputy. Shivkumar did not express his disagreement openly. He is now reaching his goal by following the party line.
Shivkumar’s restraint and message from Delhi
In these three years, there were many such occasions when Shivkumar’s supporters intensified their demand for change of leadership. However, like a seasoned politician, Shivkumar gave the same message every time that the final decision would be taken from Delhi. While playing his role in the government, he maintained control over both the organization and administration. Staying away from confrontational politics, he batted with the ball in the court of Congress Delhi.
Public honor to Siddaramaiah
Now that Siddaramaiah has resigned, only a few formalities are left for Shivakumar to reach the CM’s chair. However, whatever happened in the past few days, Shivkumar showed great restraint. In the latest development, he publicly honored Siddaramaiah during his meeting. This is not just a courtesy but also a big strategy to make the change of power smooth.
Waited and staked a strong claim
Overall, the message is clear that Shivkumar exercised restraint, waited and strengthened his claim by following the party line. In this entire incident, Congress did not repeat its previous mistakes. The party has handled the challenge of changing the Chief Minister well. Whereas in the past the party had to suffer huge losses due to wrong decisions of leaders in different states.
Congress did not repeat its old mistake
In Punjab, Congress had to suffer a big loss in the case of Amarinder Singh and Sidhu. In Madhya Pradesh, Congress had to lose power in the case of Kamal Nath and Scindia. Similarly, in the case of Gehlot vs Pilot in Rajasthan, Gogoi vs Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam and Baghel vs Singh Deo in Chhattisgarh, Congress did not show the courage to change the Chief Minister, hence it became a victim of internal strife in these states and was also out of power. Congress, which suffered losses due to its decisions in these states, showed wisdom in Karnataka.
