Relations between Canada and China appear to be improving. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yin said during his visit to Canada that by 2030, Canada’s exports to China can increase not by 50% but by 100%. He said this in a meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. Anita Anand said that Canada is focusing on strengthening its economy and creating new trading partners. He said that Canada’s economic relationship with China is very important and can be beneficial for both countries. Wang Yi is on a three-day visit to Canada. This is the first visit to Canada by a Chinese Foreign Minister in the last 10 years.
Canada-China signed an agreement in January
On Friday, Wang Yi also met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. A private meeting was held between the two leaders, in which trade and strengthening mutual relations were discussed. In January this year, an initial trade agreement was signed between Canada and China. Under this, some tariffs on electric vehicles and canola crop were reduced. During this time, Mark Carney became the first Canadian Prime Minister to visit China since 2017.
China is Canada’s second largest trading partner. After America imposed tariffs on Canada, Canada is trying to reduce its dependence on America. For this reason, Prime Minister Carney is emphasizing on increasing trade with other countries.
What target has Canada set?
Carney has set a goal that Canada will double its exports to other countries in the next 10 years. In the last one year, his government has signed more than 20 economic and security agreements. In a recent speech given in New York, Carney had also talked about a new partnership with America. He said that a strong Canada will also help in strengthening America.
However, there are differences between the two countries on some issues. On May 23, the Canadian warship HMCS Charlottetown passed through the Taiwan Strait. China opposed this and said that it will not accept any step against its sovereignty and security. Issues related to Taiwan and security still remain a challenge between the two countries.
