Sonam Wangchuk met Union Minister J.P. By writing a letter to Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, he has set a condition for ending his hunger strike. Wangchuk demanded that no legal or retaliatory action be taken against the young protesters involved in the movement. Apart from this, his condition is that there should be a meaningful discussion in the Parliament to ensure accountability, which also includes considering the resignation of the Education Minister.
Wangchuk reiterated the need to provide adequate compensation to the families of victims of suicide cases related to the exam paper leak and to ensure accountability in Parliament. He said that the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march was peaceful, but expressed concern over the police action. He made it clear that he would end his hunger strike only after receiving concrete assurance from the government, otherwise his strike would continue indefinitely.
Appeal not to take action against protesters
He has written in his letter, ‘After your meeting, about 65 MPs from different political parties wrote to me wishing a speedy recovery and expressed hope that the desired solution would be found by this evening. I too want to return to my students, education and my life’s work, but I cannot do so at the expense of the youth for whom this movement began. Therefore, I want a clear and unconditional assurance from the government that no punitive or retaliatory action will be taken against any young protestor involved in the movement. His only ‘crime’ is raising his voice to demand a fair and accountable education system.
He said that ‘the future of our democracy depends not on how it treats its supporters, but on how it treats the youth who dare to raise their voices with courage, hope and what they believe.’
