New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani often remains in the headlines. This time he is in the news for insulting the Jewish community. Some people have expressed their displeasure over Mamdani not attending the Israel Day parade organized on Sunday. This has happened for the first time in the history of America. Due to which the political and social debate intensified.
Breaking decades-old political tradition, Zoharan Mamdani did not participate in the annual parade organized in Israel’s honor on May 31. For decades, this parade has been considered an important political event for New York’s mayor, governor and other big leaders, but Mamdani did not participate in it due to his pro-Palestinian stance. Mamdani is the first mayor who did not participate in this parade.
Mamdani is a supporter of Palestine
Actually, Zoharan Mamdani is a supporter of Palestine and Israel was being honored in this parade, due to which Mamdani was not present in the parade. This parade is celebrated every year on Israel Day, where the formation of Israel as a Jewish state in 1948 is celebrated.
Denied during election campaign
Mamdani had already made his stance clear regarding this parade that he would not participate in this parade. During a press conference in New York last week, Mamdani said that he had already made his views clear regarding the Israeli government. He had said that during the election campaign itself, he had said that he would not participate in the Israel Day Parade. However, he also assured that complete security arrangements would be made by the New York Police for the peaceful conduct of the parade.
Jewish community expressed displeasure
Zohran Mamdani’s decision not to participate in the parade was strongly condemned in the city. Mark Schneier, head rabbi of Long Island’s Hampton Synagogue, called Mamdani’s decision an insult to New York’s Jewish community. He said, ‘If you do not want to come to the parade, then stay at home. We don’t need you’. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who comes from the Jewish community, participated in the parade. He said that Mamdani not taking part in the parade is his own decision and it is his decision to proudly participate in the parade.
Video released remembering ‘Nakba’
The controversy over Zohran Mamdani not attending the parade also increased because a video commemorating ‘Nakba’ was released by the Mayor’s office two weeks ago. The term ‘Nakba’ refers to the displacement of millions of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The video shows the story of a Palestinian woman who was displaced at the age of 9. This move was criticized by many Jewish organizations and Israel supporters. He said that the video did not mention the background of the Jews displaced from Muslim countries during that period and the demand for a Jewish state after the Holocaust.
Mamdani, considered the first Muslim mayor of New York, has been a long-time supporter of Palestinian rights. He has said that Israel has the right to exist, but he is not in favor of a state where any one community gets special preference,
Along with this, he also said that the safety of the Jewish community in New York is his priority and the administration is committed to dealing with anti-Semitic incidents.
