According to a story in Skanda Purana, Rishi Angira was the mental son of Lord Brahma. His son’s name was Jeeva. The creatures were very intelligent. He was of very calm nature. Jeeva very soon became knowledgeable about the Vedas. Once Jeeva went to Kashi and established Shivalinga there. After this he performed severe penance for Mahadev of Gods. This harsh penance of his continued for many years. Eventually Mahadev was pleased with the difficult penance of the creature and appeared to him in person.

Mahadev made him the guru of the gods

Mahadev told the creature that he would definitely get the fruits of his rigorous penance. Mahadev gave a boon to the creature and told him that he would be famous in the world by the name Brihaspati. Mahadev also gave him the post of Guru of the Gods and asked him to guide the Gods with his knowledge. Teach the lessons of religion and ethics. Not only this, Mahadev gave place to Jupiter in Navagraha Mandal.
