
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed grief over the devastation caused by the dangerous earthquake in Venezuela. PM Modi said, “I am deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the massive earthquake in Venezuela. On behalf of the people of India, I express my deepest condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, and especially to the families who have lost their loved ones. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected in this difficult time. India stands ready to provide all possible assistance.”
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck about 160 kilometers (100 miles) west of Caracas. Less than a minute later, a tremor of 7.5 magnitude was felt. USGS said, “There is a possibility of a large number of casualties and huge damage. This disaster can spread over a large area.” According to initial estimates, the death toll could be between 10,000 and 1,00,000.

Where has the most damage been caused?
The acting President of Venezuela has said that rescue workers from abroad are going to reach Venezuela in the coming hours. He especially thanked the leaders of the United States, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico and Qatar for offering help. Rodriguez said the country’s most affected area is ‘La Guaira’, which is located north of Caracas on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast. He described La Guerra as a “disaster area”, where rescue workers are actively “working to save lives”.
Three killed in Caracas
Three people died after two buildings collapsed in the Baruta district of Caracas. The mayor of the district gave this information on social media. Gustavo Duque, mayor of Caracas’s Chacao district, told reporters that one person was killed and four buildings completely collapsed. Twenty-two people were taken to the hospital.
