At least four Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, including a 13-year-old girl. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, the first attack hit a group of people in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, killing two people and wounding another.
Another Israeli attack killed one person in southern Gaza, according to health officials at Nasser Hospital. A 13-year-old girl, Aileen al-Fara, died after being hit by shrapnel from Israeli tank shelling in southern Gaza.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the attacks, but said one of the strikes was targeting “Hamas terrorists,” though it did not elaborate. Palestinians reported Sunday heavy tank shelling across Gaza and quadcopters – a type of unmanned aerial vehicle – hovering overhead.
The worst fighting in Gaza has subsided after a weak ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group in October, but Palestinians are reporting new deaths almost daily. Israel says it targets Hamas and other terrorists who pose a threat and does so in response to ceasefire violations.
Israel has killed more than 1,040 people in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect, according to Gaza’s health ministry under the Hamas-led government. The ministry maintains detailed records of casualties, which are generally considered reliable by United Nations agencies and independent experts. It does not distinguish between civilians and terrorists, but says that about half of all deaths are women and children.
Israel has said that five soldiers have been killed since the ceasefire. The war began with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Gaza’s health ministry said more than 73,050 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli counter-attacks in Gaza, including those killed after the ceasefire.
