election results
On Phalta seat, BJP candidate Debangshu Panda got a total of 1,49,666 votes. CPI(M) candidate Shambhu Nath Kurmi received 40,645 votes, while Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq Mollah stood third with 10,084 votes. The biggest setback in the elections was suffered by the ruling TMC, whose candidate Jahangir Khan could get only 7,783 votes and even his security deposit was confiscated.
Phalta Assembly seat has long been considered a part of TMC’s politically influential Diamond Harbor constituency. The party easily retained this seat in 2021 with about 57 percent vote share. However, this time the political picture completely changed in the re-polling.
Big change in vote share
In the re-polling, BJP’s vote share increased to 71.2 percent, which was 36.75 percent in 2021. At the same time, TMC’s vote share fell to only 3.7 percent. According to political analysts, this result is being considered a sign of a big change in the politics of the state.
The Election Commission had ordered re-polling on May 21 at all 285 booths following complaints of use of chemicals like ink, adhesives and perfumes on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the voting held on April 29. Voting was conducted amid heavy security arrangements.
TMC candidate withdrew name
Two days before the voting, TMC candidate Jahangir Khan had announced his withdrawal in the interest of Falta, however, his name remained on the EVM as the deadline for withdrawal of nominations had expired.
Shubhendu Adhikari’s attack on TMC
Meanwhile, Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari called this result a proof of free voting of the people. He said that this time voters got a chance to vote without pressure and fear. The official accused TMC of misusing the state machinery and indulging in politics of intimidation. Without taking names, he also targeted TMC general secretary and Diamond Harbor MP Abhishek Banerjee, calling him a fraud who suddenly came to power and acquired the post of commander. Describing this result as just the beginning, the CM claimed that the people of West Bengal are preparing to reject TMC in a comprehensive political manner.
Debangshu Panda expressed gratitude to the public
After this spectacular victory, Debangshu Panda said that this time people got the opportunity to vote in a free and fair manner. He thanked the people of Falta for this historic support. He said that this is the victory of the people of Falata.
