There was an uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday over the police search in the CPI(M) office in Delhi. CPI(M) MP John Brittas raised the issue. Other opposition MPs also stood in his support and raised slogans against the government. Brittas asked why action was not taken against Delhi Police. While Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also supported Britas, Union Minister JP Nadda responded by saying that Delhi Police is doing its work as per the law, the ruckus over this is not right.
What is the whole matter?
According to CPI(M) MP John Brittas, on Tuesday Delhi Police officials entered the office of CPI(M), which is a national party. They wanted to detain SFI leader and former JNU Students Union president Aishi Ghosh. Ghosh is one of the prominent faces of the movement at Jantar Mantar.
Ghosh says there is a warrant against him, which is related to a case of 2021, but I spoke to the police officer and he said that a warrant was issued against him. Information about the warrant was given over the phone. You cannot give warrant information over the phone. It must be handed over personally. Now, his aim is to send a message to all the students who took part in the movement.
Search on court order
Let us tell you that in a case of the year 2021, the court issued a non-bailable warrant against Aishi Ghosh. Ghosh did not appear in the court for the hearing, hence a warrant has been issued. Delhi Police is searching for Ghosh in compliance with the court order. Under this, she had reached CPI(M) headquarters AKG Bhawan, but she was not found there.
What happened in Rajya Sabha?
Opposition MPs were protesting against the attempt to arrest Aishi Ghosh in Delhi. He also reiterated the demand for Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the issue of police action against the students protesting in the national capital against the NEET question paper leak. Soon after the listed documents were tabled in the House, MP John Brittas raised the issue of Aishi Ghosh.
He said that a team of Delhi Police in plain clothes entered the party office to arrest Aishi Ghosh in a case related to the 2021 JNU protests. Linking the police action to recent student protests, Brittas said Aishi Ghosh’s only mistake was that she had taken part in the Jantar Mantar protest. Supporting his point, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that democracy is in danger. The Congress President questioned who ordered the entry of police into the office of a national political party.
Responding to the allegations, House leader JP Nadda said that this is a general law and order related matter. He said that the police has to act as per the law and it has taken action accordingly. The Union Minister also said that if any student is involved in active politics or movements, he may have to face such action.
Nadda said that he has also been associated with the student movement and he too had to face such action. He said, during the Emergency, I was also arrested from the classroom. He told that this had happened twice. Members of CPI (M) and other opposition parties protested over the incident.
