Delhi: Charges framed against 13 including former Congress MLA Asif in 19 year old case, 17 accused acquitted.

The troubles of former Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Khan have increased. Charges have been framed against Asif Khan in the case of burning of Jamia Nagar police station in 2007. He has been accused of inciting a riot and carrying out a deadly attack.

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has framed charges in the case of gathering a crowd at Jamia Nagar Police Station on August 22, 2007 and then instigating the crowd to burn the police station. Apart from the former Congress MLA, the court has made charges against 13 other accused. In the 19 year old case, on one hand the court framed charges against the accused for gathering illegal crowd, rioting and carrying out a deadly attack, while on the other hand it completely acquitted 17 other people from the case.

What was the Jamia Nagar police station case?

This incident took place on 22 August 2007 in Jamia Nagar area. According to Delhi Police, Congress leader Asif Mohammad Khan along with his associates gathered a crowd in the area and instigated them for violence. Then within a short time the crowd went out of control and attacked the Jamia Nagar police station, pelted stones and then burnt the police station.

During this incident of arson, 3 people were shot and 18 people including many policemen were seriously injured, and there was huge damage to government property.

Serious sections against the accused

Now, almost 19 years after the incident, the Magistrate of Rouse Avenue Court has framed charges in this case against former MLA Asif Mohammed Khan and other accused under serious sections (IPC 148, 149, 186, 307 and 395) like inciting people to commit violence by unlawful assembly and attempt to murder.

During the hearing, the court framed charges against a total of 13 people including Asif Khan, while 17 others were acquitted as no evidence was found.
