There have been sharp reactions from political parties on the announcement of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to return to the country in December. Some parties have demanded that he face justice, while some have alleged a bigger political conspiracy. National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced that if Sheikh Hasina returns to her country, she will be given death penalty.
In an interview with Reuters, Sheikh Hasina claimed that she was planning to return to Bangladesh in December along with her party leaders and workers, who are currently taking refuge in India. He also said that he was considering surrendering before the authorities.
According to Bangladeshi outlet Pratham Aalo, NCP convenor Nahid Islam said that Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh can return only to face the execution of its death sentence.
He said, “If Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, it should be only for the execution of the death sentence. We want this punishment not only against Sheikh Hasina, but against every person who has received such a verdict.”
Sheikh Hasina should be brought back
He said, “The verdict has already been pronounced in Bangladesh. Now it is the responsibility of this government to bring back the perpetrators of the genocide through proper diplomatic and legal means and implement the punishment.”
Nahid Islam said, “It is not for Sheikh Hasina to decide how she will come back. Whether she comes with others or not, whether she surrenders or not, it is for the Bangladesh government to decide. The government should talk to New Delhi on this issue; no other party is involved in this. The government will decide when to bring her back, how to bring her back, and how to implement the court’s decision. She should be brought back only after making all the necessary preparations.”
Regarding the execution of Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence, the Chief Whip of the Opposition said, “I believe this will also be a major step towards ensuring stability in the country. The government should implement the verdict without any delay. If anyone is thinking of any other way, it will not be good for anyone.”
BNP said- political conspiracy
At the same time, a senior BNP leader said that the issue should be resolved through the legal process, referring to the ongoing trial in 2024 over the killings during the major insurgency in July. Meanwhile, Jamaat leaders said that Hasina’s statement could be related to some hidden political agenda or conspiracy.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that legal action is already underway against Hasina. Sheikh Hasina has already been sentenced to death by a Dhaka court in a case related to mass killings during the July 2024 uprising. “Trials are also going on in many other murder cases.” He said that it will be the job of the courts to decide the criminal responsibility of Hasina.
Leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami said that Hasina’s announcement could be part of a bigger political conspiracy. Jamaat Secretary General Mia Ghulam Parwar said that “an internal secret and conspiracy” may be hidden in this statement.
