Danger of forest fire due to extreme heat in Britain, high alert in many areas

July 13, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The continuous scorching heat in Britain has now become a big concern. Experts have warned that the risk of forest fires has reached extraordinary levels in many parts of the country. According to the Fire Severity Index of government organization Natural England, the danger is greatest in Southern England and the Midlands. This week this threat may spread to south-east and eastern England. At the same time, the danger of fire remains very high in most parts of England and Wales.

Britain’s Meteorological Department has said that the weather will be hot, sunny and dry in most parts of the country for the next few days. At many places the temperature will be above 30 degrees Celsius. There may be rain and thunder in some areas of southern England from Monday, but the weather is likely to remain mostly dry throughout the week.

Temperature broke record

According to Britain’s Meteorological Department, 2026 has become the first such year. When temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or more were recorded on six different days. Earlier in 1976 and 2020 this record was of five days. For the first time this year, a temperature of 35 degrees or more has been recorded in three different months. At the same time, the number of days with temperature of 34 degrees or more has also reached a record level.

Due to the scorching heat, water related accidents have also increased. Two 18-year-old youths died due to drowning in Derbyshire and Greater Manchester. The Meteorological Department has advised people to exercise caution and check the water temperature before entering the water. Due to continuous drought, hosepipe ban has also been implemented in many areas of Eastern England, Cambridge, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Kent to save water.

Appeal to people to be cautious

National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) official Dave Swallow said that in such hot and dry conditions, even small carelessness can cause a big fire. He appealed to the people not to leave disposable barbecues, burning cigarettes or glass bottles in the open. He said that people should definitely go out in summer, but should also be careful.

In the last few days, forest and grassland fires broke out at many places in Derbyshire, London, East Sussex, West Sussex and North Wales. Train services were also affected due to bushfire near London’s Stratford station. A major emergency was declared as a fire spread rapidly near the Conwy Mountains in North Wales and some people in the village of Cappelulo were advised to evacuate their homes.
