Recently an attempted cyber attack was made on CBSE’s re-evaluation and verification portal. According to the board, when thousands of students were using the portal, hackers sent a huge amount of fake traffic to disrupt the system. CBSE said that within two minutes about 15 lakh hits were recorded on the portal. However, despite the attempted cyber attack, the board successfully processed the applications of more than 16 thousand students. After this incident, DoS i.e. Denial-of-Service attack has once again come into discussion. Let us know what this attack is and why it is dangerous.
How did the cyber attack happen on CBSE portal?
Giving information on social media platform X, CBSE said that more than 8,000 users were active on the re-evaluation portal at one time. Meanwhile, cyber attackers targeted the portal through Denial-of-Service i.e. DoS attack. According to the board, around 15 lakh hits were sent to the portal in just two minutes. Apart from this, more than one lakh attempts to gain unauthorized access to the system files were also recorded. Despite such a large number of suspicious activities, CBSE’s cyber security team took control of the situation and by 3 pm, applications of more than 16,000 students had been successfully submitted.
Update from our Cybersecurity Teams:
The CBSE revaluation portal is currently supporting over 8,000 concurrent users. As of 3:00 PM today, more than 16,000 students have successfully completed their submissions.

What is Denial-of-Service attack?
Denial of service (DoS) attack is a type of cyber attack, the purpose of which is to make a website, server or online service unavailable to end users. Under normal circumstances, a website can easily process incoming requests, but during a DoS attack, attackers send a large amount of fake or excessive traffic in a short period of time. Due to this, the pressure on the server suddenly increases and its processing capacity starts getting affected. This may cause the website to slow down, show frequent errors, or even shut down completely. In such a situation, genuine users face difficulty in logging in, filling forms or using any service.
Why are such attacks considered dangerous?
Cybersecurity experts consider DoS attacks as a serious threat because it can disrupt essential online services. If such an attack occurs on any government portal, banking platform or educational website, thousands or lakhs of users can be affected. This not only disrupts service but also creates operational challenges for the institutions concerned. In many cases, attackers also use DoS attacks to distract the security team so that other malicious activities can be carried out. This is why a strong cyber security framework and constant monitoring is considered extremely important to protect against such attacks.
