County Championship: This pacer single-handedly dealt with 8 batsmen, blew the stumps of 4, now will he return to the team?

June 14, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Only one match has taken place in the ongoing Test series between England and New Zealand but a lot of drama has been seen in it. While the pitch at Lord’s Stadium came under question, England won the match easily. Immediately after this victory, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson got caught in a nightclub controversy. Amidst all these controversies, an England player is staking his claim for a comeback with his strong performance. This player is Matthew Potts, who single-handedly took 8 wickets in a County Championship match and led his team Durham to victory.

The match played between Durham and Derbyshire in Division-2 of the County Championship ended in just 3 days and Matthew Potts was the reason for this. Right-arm fast bowler Potts wreaked havoc on the Derbyshire batsmen in both the innings and took the maximum of 10 wickets in the match. In this too, he took 8 wickets only in the second innings, with the help of which Durham won the match by an innings and 22 runs.

27 year old fast bowler Matthew Potts took 4 wickets in the second innings of the derby on the second day of the match. On Sunday, June 14, on the third day of the match, when Derby started its innings at 99 runs for 4 wickets, it was 160 runs behind Durham’s first innings score. But it did not take much time for the remaining 6 wickets to fall and in these also 4 wickets were taken by Potts. This pacer took 8 wickets for 66 runs in his 24.3 overs and bundled out Derby for 237 runs. In this way Durham registered an easy victory.

Potts took 10 wickets in the match and thus staked his claim for a return to England’s Test squad. He was not selected by the England team in the first and second test matches of the current test series. But there is still a third Test match left in the series and in such a situation, if Potts gets a place, then this performance will play a big role in it. This bowler played his last Test match in January 2026 on the Australia tour. He has taken 36 wickets in 11 test matches so far.
