Meta is making another big bet on AI. This time the company is building a new data center in Canada, which shows how much electricity is required for the rapidly increasing use of AI. The company has announced plans to build a C$13 billion (about $9.17 billion) data center in Alberta (Canada). This center will use as much electricity as about 8 lakh houses.
According to Reuters report, this project will be Meta’s first data center in Canada and 33rd data center worldwide. This facility will be built in Sturgeon County with an initial capacity of 1 gigawatt, which can later be expanded to 1.8 gigawatt with the increasing demand for AI computing.
This announcement comes at a time when Meta is investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure. Company Advanced AI It is rapidly increasing its computing capacity to train and run the model. It has joined other big technology companies that are racing to build large data centers to support next generation artificial intelligence.
Higher demand for water and electricity due to AI
Meta’s decision to build a data center in Alberta was taken for several reasons. The province has abundant supplies of natural gas, energy costs are low compared to many other areas, and the cool climate helps reduce the cost of cooling large server farms. Alberta is also actively trying to attract investment from large technology companies. Officials say that many more proposals to build large-scale data centers are still under review.
“This is the first project of its kind, of its size and scale, but it won’t be the last,” Alberta Technology Minister Nate Glubish said during the announcement. The biggest discussion about this project is regarding the need for electricity. Meta said the facility would use approximately the same amount of electricity as 800,000 homes. To support the project, the company plans to bear the cost of generating new power and upgrading the electricity grid, rather than relying solely on existing infrastructure.
