Controversial Movies Banned in India: From ‘Sutlej’ to ‘Bandit Queen’…these popular movies were banned due to controversies

A controversy had arisen over this film based on the life of Phoolan Devi, when Phoolan Devi had approached the court saying that its story was wrong. After his objection, Delhi High Court had put a temporary stay on the release of the film. Later the Supreme Court lifted this ban, after which the film was released in theatres. 
This film of Anurag Kashyap was based on the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. At that time, the hearing of this case was going on in the court, hence the court had banned the release of the film. This film was released in theaters in 2007 after the legal ban was lifted after many years. 
This film of Deepa Mehta featured a homosexual relationship, due to which there were protests at many places. After the growing controversy, the film was removed from theatres. Later, after re-review, it was allowed to be re-released without any cuts. 
The Censor Board had refused to give certificate to Anurag Kashyap's film 'Paanch' citing violence, drugs and objectionable language. Later it was approved with some cuts, but despite this the film was never released in theaters in India. 

This film satirized the then Indira Gandhi government during the Emergency. For this reason it was banned. Not only this, the prints and copies of the film were also confiscated and destroyed. This is considered one of the most talked about censorship cases of India.
The Censor Board (CBFC) had refused to give certificate to this film, directed by Mira Nair, due to its bold scenes and nudity. The film was released in many countries, but could never reach theaters in India. 
This documentary made on the 2002 Gujarat riots was banned by the Censor Board saying that it could increase communal tension. However, after a few months, this ban was lifted after re-review.
