Congress ministers in Tamil Nadu government after 59 years, know which two MLAs got this golden chance

May 21, 2026 by Uma Shankar

There was a time when Congress ruled Tamil Nadu, but time passed and Dravidian politics became dominant in the politics here. The effect was that Congress moved away from power. It’s been 60 years, but there doesn’t seem to be any remote possibility of him returning to power. Although the party was in coalition government with DMK for a long time, it did not get a place in the cabinet. Now Congress is going to get a share in power with 2 ministers in the new government of the state.

The Congress party is going to join the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday. In such a situation, for the first time after 59 years, Congress is becoming a part of any alliance in this southern state. Congress, which left ally DMK after the elections and joined actor Vijay’s TVK, is getting full respect in this government.

Congress gets ministerial post in Tamil Nadu after 59 years

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday approved the joining of its two MLAs Rajesh Kumar and P. Vishwanathan in the ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) government. Both these MLAs will become ministers today Thursday. Congress general secretary Venugopal said, “This is a historic occasion as the Congress is joining the Tamil Nadu cabinet after a long gap of 59 years.”

The special thing is that Congress was given 28 seats to contest on behalf of DMK in the elections, out of which 5 people won. Now 2 out of these 5 MLAs are going to become ministers. Come, let us know who these two lucky MLAs are and from which seat they have won.

Vishwanathan: SC leader who won the general seat

First talk about P. Viswanathan. Vishwanathan is the MLA from Melur assembly constituency of Madurai district and is also working as the Telangana in-charge secretary of Congress. Vishwanathan, who holds a Post Graduate (PG) degree, has been active in public life and party organization for several decades. He played an active role during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

Vishwanathan was elected MP from Kanchipuram Lok Sabha constituency of Tamil Nadu in 2009, while he also worked as a director in SBI, Chennai Circle Board between 2007 and 2009. In the recently held assembly elections, he secured 60,080 votes to win from Melur seat. Moreover, he is the only SC/ST candidate to win from the general assembly constituency. He has earlier worked as Kerala in-charge secretary of Congress.

Rajesh: Hat-trick of victory in Kanyakumari

After Vishwanathan from Congress, S. Rajesh Kumar is being made minister. He has been a Congress MLA thrice from Kiliyoor Assembly seat of Kanyakumari. He is a resident of Karungal in Kanyakumari district. Veteran late leader R. Ponnappa Nadar’s grandson Rajesh has scored a hat-trick of consecutive victories from Kiliyur assembly constituency in the elections of 2016, 2021 and 2026.

Rajesh Kumar has also served as the Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party from May 2021 till becoming the leader of the party’s Legislature Party on February 17, 2024. Rajesh Kumar, an advocate by profession, joined the Congress Party in 1990 itself. He has worked on many different positions in the party including Kanyakumari West District President. Apart from Tamil, he knows English, Malayalam and Kannada languages.
