Cocktail 2 Review: Shahid, Kriti and Rashmika’s rom-com passes the ultimate ‘vibe check’, know how the film is

June 19, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Shahid Kapoor Cocktail Movie Review: When ‘Cocktail’ was released in theaters 14 years ago i.e. in 2012, that film had written such a definition of friendship, love and complications that the youth still remembers. Now, after 14 years, with the same flavor and a completely new star cast, director Homi Adajania has returned to the theaters with his new offering ‘Cocktail 2’. When the trailer of the film was out, the question in mind was whether this film would be able to capture the pulse of the relationships of today’s generation or not? But now the answer to this question has been found.

Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna have left no stone unturned in bringing life to their cool, carefree and chilled-out characters. If you say it in just one line, ‘Cocktail 2’ is such a modern tale of complicated relationships, love and friendship of today’s times, which will win your heart. But, in today’s GenZ language, is this film just a cool vibe or is there a deeper emotion hidden behind it? Could this film touch the cult status of 2012’s ‘Cocktail’? If you want to know the whole reality of this complicated love triangle and want answers to some questions before booking tickets, then definitely read this complete review.

Story:

The story of the film revolves around Kunal (Shahid Kapoor) and Diya (Rashmika Mandanna). These two have been in love with each other since college days. This years old relationship has progressed with time, but now a big gap is clearly visible in the thinking and expectations of both of them. Diya now wants to give the next name to this relationship, that is, she wants to get married and settle down, whereas Kunal still wants to live life comfortably on the same old path, without any unnecessary commitments.

Amidst this dilemma, a new twist comes in the story, when both of them go on a beautiful trip to Sicily. There he meets Ellie (Kriti Sanon). Ellie is a completely cool, free-thinking girl who lives life on her own terms. As soon as Ellie enters, the entire equation of Kunal and Diya’s relationship changes. Caught between friendship, attraction, love and trust, this story is not just a simple love triangle, but it brings out the nuances of today’s generation struggling with ‘situationship’ and ‘relationship anxiety’, which every youth of today will be able to relate to somewhere.

How is the movie?

The biggest feature of ‘Cocktail 2’ is that it starts showing the intricacies of relationships very clearly from the very first frame. The first 50 minutes of the film are so spectacular and gripping that you are unable to take your eyes off the screen. The screenplay of the film does not give you a chance to get bored at all and its pace is perfectly balanced. The director has not shown the emotional moments in a hurry, but has given them full time to flourish and reach into the hearts of the audience.

The beautiful and charming locations of Sicily give an amazing visual experience to the film, due to which your eyes remain fixed on the screen while watching the film. Overall, the mood of the film is such that it beautifully presents today’s changing love-life and friendship on the big screen, without any loud drama. If you like heart-touching and emotion-filled stories, then this film will take you on a visual and emotional ride.

direction

Homi Adajania has mastered the art of portraying the fabric of modern relationships on screen, and ‘Cocktail 2’ is another solid proof of this. The best thing about Homi was that he did not favor any one character in the story. He has shown the decisions, mistakes and emotions of all three – Kunal, Diya and Ellie – in such a realistic manner that the audience is unable to consider anyone as a villain. The editing of the film is crisp and the director did not let the flow of the story get disturbed anywhere. Where the film has to make the film laugh, the comic timing is amazing and where the pain of heartbreak has to be shown, Homi has used silence very well.

Know how the acting of the artists is?

On the acting front, this film proves to be a big surprise package. Shahid Kapoor completely immerses himself in his character. Whenever an emotional scene comes on screen, Shahid’s acting directly hits the heart and at many places, he is seen single-handedly carrying the entire story forward on his shoulders. Whereas Rashmika Mandanna has played the character of Diya with utmost simplicity, seriousness and maturity. Rashmika’s eyes say a lot about the character of a girl who stands up for her rights.

But, if anyone has looted this entire gathering, it is him. Kriti Sanon! Kriti dominates the screen as soon as she appears in this film. Her character ‘Ellie’ definitely reminds Deepika Padukone (Veronica) of the first film, but Kriti has made her completely her own. She is goofy, funny, bubbly and at the same time looks a complete stunner on screen. Her amazing screen presence and her hold on emotional scenes is so strong that she does not let you miss Deepika even for a moment. The chemistry between these three actors is the real backbone of this film.

see or not

Another biggest strength of this film is its dialogues. There is no unnecessary heavy melodrama or whining in the dialogues, rather it seems to be exactly the same conversations that you and I have with our friends or partners in real life. Many dialogues written about love and relationships are so deep that they keep resonating in your mind even after coming out of the theatre.

As far as music is concerned, Pritam has once again proved that when it comes to romance and modern albums, he has no equal. The songs of the film do not seem forced anywhere, be it a romantic track or an emotional song full of sadness, each tune doubles the impact of the scene. The background music of the film is also amazing, which provides excellent support to the emotional journey of the characters.

However, despite the fast pace and fun with which the first half of the film progresses, the story becomes a little heavier and more serious in the second half. Viewers who go expecting only light entertainment may find the second part a bit stretched.

Overall, ‘Cocktail 2’ is a film which very well describes the condition of the hearts of today’s youth. This film presents before us the changing definitions of love, friendship and trust from a new and fresh perspective. Although the backdrop and core idea of the story may seem a bit familiar, but the exceptional acting of Shahid, Rashmika and especially Kriti Sanon, the excellent music of Pritam and the excellent direction of Homi Adajania make watching this film in the theater once, completely worth the money.
