Clash over government figures in Madhya Pradesh… 8.25 lakh unemployed missing from employment portal in 6 months

July 21, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The government and the opposition came face to face on the issue of unemployment in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. In response to the question of Congress MLA Pratap Grewal, the government said that currently 17.71 lakh educated unemployed are registered on the state employment portal. Whereas in December 2025 the same number was 25.96 lakh. That means, in just six months, names of 8.25 lakh youth were removed from the portal. Regarding this figure, the opposition accused the government of manipulating unemployment figures.

According to the government’s reply, the unemployed registered on the portal include about 7.30 lakh graduates, 2.33 lakh post graduates, 5 lakh 12th pass and 1.70 lakh 10th pass youth. In the category wise figures, 7.12 lakh OBC, 4.27 lakh general, 3.32 lakh SC and 2.98 lakh ST category unemployed are recorded. Whereas 9.39 lakh men and 8.31 lakh women are registered in search of employment.

The government also admitted that 8.17 lakh offer letters were issued in the private sector between June 2017 and June 2026. But after this, there is no system to find out how many youth have joined the job, how many have lost their jobs or how many are still working. The opposition also raised questions as to how despite only 2,700 youth getting offer letters in the private sector in the last six months, lakhs of names were left out from the employment portal.

Statement of Congress MLA Pratap Grewal

Congress MLA Pratap Grewal, who raised the issue in the Assembly, said that the government’s reply itself has proved that in just six months, names of about 8 lakh youth disappeared from the government employment portal. He asked the government where these youth got jobs, at what post and at what salary. Grewal alleged that instead of providing employment, the government is trying to show less unemployment through the magic of numbers.

Statement of Employment Minister Gautam Tetwal

State Skill Development and Employment Minister Gautam Tetwal rejected the allegations of the opposition and said that all the figures given by the government in the Assembly are completely correct. He said that the objective of the state government is to provide employment to the youth and the youth are being continuously provided employment through various job fairs and other means. The minister said that the government is continuously working for employment generation.
