
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to Seychelles. On Sunday he underlined the deep ties between the people of India and Seychelles.
While addressing the National Assembly of Seychelles, he specifically mentioned chutney and samosas. He said that the taste of chutney and samosas is among those special things which reflect the common heritage of both the countries.
In his address, the Prime Minister said that the taste of chutney and samosas has become a symbol of the historical and cultural ties connecting the Indian diaspora with this island nation. The PM said that the flavors of chutney and samosas are among the unique elements that reflect the common heritage of India and Seychelles. PM Modi said that the relationship between India and Seychelles is not limited to just diplomacy and trade. It is based on centuries of cultural exchange and close relations between people. He said that the Indian community has contributed significantly to the development of Seychelles over the years and has strengthened bilateral relations by preserving its traditions.
‘Seychelles’ greatest strength is its people…’
The PM said that the biggest strength of Seychelles is its people. He said that people from all over the world have been coming to this country for generations. He said that they brought with them different languages, customs, beliefs and traditions. He said that they brought with them different languages, customs, beliefs and traditions. And together they created a common identity of which the people of Seychelles are proud, the PM said. Referring to the National Assembly’s motto of ‘Unity in Diversity’, the PM said that as the country celebrates its ‘rich heritage’, the connections between the cultures of India and Seychelles are clearly visible in everyday life.
‘Can be felt in the taste of samosa and chutney’
The Prime Minister said, ‘These can be felt in the taste of curry, cocoa, samosa and chutney. They can be seen in Garba dance celebrations during Diwali, Thai Pongal and Navratri. He said that it is this feeling that gives us great confidence in the future of our friendship.
50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations
Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, PM Modi said, ‘Today, as I stand before you in this historic golden jubilee year, our people are celebrating a friendship that is more than two and a half centuries old’. PM said, ‘Very few partnerships have been built on such a strong foundation and very few have grown with such intimacy, trust and goodwill. Looking to the future, let us continue to strengthen this foundation’. He said that India will remain a trusted partner of Seychelles and will celebrate its achievements.
‘The best phase of friendship is yet to come’
PM Modi said, ‘We will support your aspirations and stand with you like friends’. He said, ‘The last 50 years have been very wonderful. But I firmly believe that the best chapters of Seychelles’ story are yet to be written and the best times of our friendship are yet to come.’
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India has an important relationship with Seychelles. The first small group of Indians (5 people) reached Seychelles in 1770. The total population of Seychelles is about 1,20,000 and about 5,000 people of Indian origin live there.
