
After Typhoon Bavi hit the coast in the eastern part of China on Saturday, about 2 million people were evacuated to safe places due to heavy rains along with strong winds in the region. As storm Bavi moves towards the east coast, the local administration has issued a red alert for rain. In view of the emergency, relief and rescue measures have been intensified in many cities of China including the capital Beijing.
According to the Meteorological Center of Zhejiang Province, this year’s ninth storm Bavi hit the coast of Zhejiang province in East China at around 11.20 pm on Saturday night. According to state news agency Xinhua, Typhoon Bavi hit the coast of the county-level city of Yuhuan with a maximum wind speed of 40 meters per second.
Red alert issued regarding rain
According to the news, earlier on Saturday, China’s National Meteorological Center had issued a red alert regarding rainfall, the highest level in its four-level warning system. Along with this, orange alert was issued for the storm. It was reported in the news that more than 20 lakh people were evacuated to safe places in the eastern part of China.
According to the forecast of the National Meteorological Center, torrential rain is expected in large parts of the country including Zhejiang, northern Fujian, north-eastern Jiangxi and southern Anhui in the 24-hour period till 2 pm today. Apart from this, heavy rain has also been predicted in some parts of Beijing and Hebei.
Maximum wind speed 144 km/h
According to Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration, ‘Bawi’s maximum wind speed near its center is 144 km/h and it is passing north of Taiwan on Saturday. There is a possibility of it moving towards Zhejiang in East China. Officials said 113 people were injured due to Typhoon Bavi.
More than 200 flights canceled across the region
More than 14,200 people were evacuated to safe places from different parts. Schools and offices remained closed in most areas of Taiwan on Saturday. Japan has warned of high waves on the southern islands of Okinawa Prefecture and more than 200 flights have been canceled across the region.
