The Siliguri Corridor (Chicken Neck), India’s most sensitive strategic area, has long been considered its biggest security concern. It is only a 22 km wide landmass, which connects the main part of India with seven states of the North-East. If this corridor is disrupted in any war or major crisis, then North-East India can be cut off from the rest of the country. Keeping this threat in mind, India has done large-scale military and infrastructure development here in the last few years.
1. Old airbases are being reactivated
India has started redeveloping many old airbases and airports located near the Bangladesh border. Places like Balurghat, Ambadi, Binnaguri and Malda are being made useful again. With this, fighter aircraft, transport aircraft and military helicopters can be deployed rapidly if needed.
2. Modernization of Rupsi Airport
Rupsi Airport of Assam is being modernized. It can become an important center for both military and civil activities in the North-Eastern region. This will speed up the movement of soldiers and military equipment.
3. Plan of underground rail line
India is preparing to build about 35 km long underground rail line below Chicken Neck. This railway route will help in continuing the supply of troops, weapons and supplies even in case of war. Being underground, it will be difficult to damage it with air strikes.
4. Deploying modern weapons
India has deployed Rafale fighter aircraft, Akash missile defense system and other air defense systems in the region. This has increased the response capability in case of China or any other possible threat. New military bases have been built in areas like Bamuni, Kishanganj and Chopra. Due to this, the deployment and operation of the army has become much faster and effective than before.
With the help of drones, radar and modern surveillance systems, India can now keep a better eye on this entire area than before. With this, any possible infiltration or military activity can be detected quickly.
Why is this preparation important?
According to experts, India is most worried about a possible conflict with China. If China exerts pressure from the direction of Tibet and Doklam area, the Siliguri corridor may become the most sensitive point. For this reason, India is trying to transform this area from its weakness into a strong military shield.
