Chaturmas 2026: In Sanatan Dharma, Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month has special significance. From this Ekadashi, Lord goes into Yoga Nidra. The resting time of the Lord is known as Chaturmas. Tomorrow i.e. on 25th July is Devshayani Ekadashi Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month and with this Chaturmas will also begin. This time is considered to be the sleeping time of the gods. This is the reason why during Chaturmas it is advised to stay away from worldly pleasures and concentrate on worship, chanting, penance, meditation etc.
At this time, there is a ban on marriage, engagement, housewarming, naming ceremony and other auspicious works, because it is believed that due to the rest of Lord Vishnu, the auspicious works done at this time do not yield auspicious results. From tomorrow the Lord will rest for 119 days and then will wake up on Devuthani Ekadashi on 20th November. According to the legend, Lord Vishnu leaves Kshir Sagar to rest during his Yoganidra during the four months of Chaturmas and goes to the underworld of demon king Bali and rests in his palace for four months. Pleased with the charity of King Bali, Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana gave him a boon and went to the underworld with him. Then Mother Lakshmi convinced the demon king Bali and brought the Lord back to Vaikuntha Dham.

Even when Lord Vishnu was going back to Vaikuntha Dham with Mother Lakshmi, he had given a boon to the demon king Bali. God had told King Bali that he would come and rest in his underworld for four months in a year. Since then, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu leaves the responsibility of the world for four months and goes to the underworld and rests. Then on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi they return to Goddess Lakshmi.
